It is often difficult to maintain a smoke-free hospital site and there can be concern from staff about approaching people who are smoking in the hospital grounds. The Audio Stop Smoking System is a valuable and important tool in that the message can be given discreetly without the need to approach smokers. The push button system can be activated by anybody, and we often find smokers will immediately extinguish their cigarettes as soon as the audio is transmitted. The audio speakers are located at smoking hot-spots, and the corresponding push buttons become well-known amongst staff through internal communications and word of mouth. This is reassuring for staff and patients located by these hot-spots, particularly Cancer Services and Maternity.

The idea for this innovative system came from one of our incredible midwives Hayley. Deeply committed to supporting pregnant smokers in quitting for a healthier pregnancy. Hayley collaborated with the team to create a system that not only delivers vital health messages but does so in a unique and impactful way — including using the voices of children. This heartfelt approach makes the messages more personal and effective, resonating with everyone who hears them.
The system has proven to be exceptionally effective, both within the maternity area and across the wider trust. It’s embraced by staff, service users and visitors, playing a vital role in fostering a healthier, smoke-free environment for everyone. This initiative is a shining example of how innovative ideas and teamwork can drive positive change
